Pregnancy after Breast Augmentation

February 20th, 2012

If you are planning on having children in the future, it is important to discuss these plans with Dr. Fata before moving forward with your breast augmentation procedure. While future pregnancy plans do not rule you out as a candidate for breast augmentation, you will still need to be aware of the issues that may arise following childbirth.

There are two main issues to consider regarding pregnancy after breast augmentation. The first has to do with your ability to breastfeed. There is no scientific information that shows any negative effect on your child if you breastfeed with implants. However, there also has never been a research study carried out long enough to study these same children until they became adults. This holds true even if you have silicone breast implants.

In most cases, you should have no trouble breastfeeding with breast implants. However, some women have difficulty with breastfeeding with or without breast implants. If you are concerned about potential risks, you should discuss your concerns with Dr. Fata at your consultation.

The other issue to consider is how future pregnancies will impact the appearance of your breasts. Your breasts generally grow during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lactation. In some women, their breast will return to their original size and shape, but in many cases, their breasts will ultimately lose volume, especially in the upper portion of the breasts, after breastfeeding. They may also be left with some loose skin.

Ultimately, the decision of when to undergo breast augmentation is highly personal and must be determined based on a variety of lifestyle factors. You can enjoy the results of your breast augmentation for years before you have children, but the changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding may make a second procedure helpful to maintain your original results.

What is Tumescent Liposuction?

February 16th, 2012

When liposuction was first developed decades ago, it produced a significant amount of bleeding, bruising, swelling, and post-operative pain. In response to these complications, plastic surgeons began using newer, more innovative techniques that improved the safety and effectiveness of liposuction. One of the first techniques developed was tumescent liposuction.

With tumescent liposuction, a solution containing saline, adrenaline and local anesthetic is injected into the areas of fat to be treated to reduce blood loss and pain. Tumescent liposuction also enabled plastic surgeons to perform the procedure using local anesthesia when limited areas are being treated.

Over time, tumescent liposuction has continued to be refined, resulting in the development of the Superwet Technique. This technique uses the same concentration of adrenaline and local anesthetic, but with a smaller volume of fluid, creating a 1:1 ratio of fluid injected to fat removed. Although the amount of fluid injected varies, many people use the terms “tumescent” and “superwet” interchangeably. This provides you with all of the benefits of traditional tumescent liposuction while further reducing the risk of complications.

Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata uses the Superwet Technique with his liposuction patients because in his vast experience, this technique consistently yields the most effective results. Most patients will receive general anesthesia as part of their liposuction procedure, but in cases where only a small area is being treated, Dr. Fata may use sedation instead.

Does Liposuction Leave Extensive Scarring?

January 28th, 2012

One of the most common concerns among patients contemplating plastic surgery deals with scarring. While liposuction is far less invasive than many other procedures, it still requires an incision. As a result, scarring is inevitable. However, that does not mean your scar will be very large or very noticeable.

The cannula used in your liposuction procedure is very small, containing a diameter of approximately 3-5 millimeters. As a result, the incision used for your procedure will be small, a quarter of an inch at most, reducing the size of your scar.

Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata has nearly two decades of experience performing liposuction procedures. During this time, he has refined his technique to minimize your scar. He strategically chooses incision points that will minimize trauma to your skin and reduce the visibility of the resulting scar.

It is important to remember that everyone’s body heals differently. However, in most cases you can expect that your scars will fade over time to the point where they are hardly visible.

Dr. Fata will address any questions you may have about scarring at your initial consultation. Ultimately, it is important that you feel comfortable with the proposed treatment plan before moving forward with your liposuction procedure, and Dr. Fata will work to ease any concerns you may have about scarring at this time.

What Can a Facelift Correct?

January 25th, 2012

A facelift can dramatically improve signs of aging in the lower half of your face and neck, making you look and feel much younger and more refreshed. The procedure accomplishes your aesthetic goals by tightening muscles and removing fat and excess skin in your facial region. In many cases, you can potentially look up to 10-15 years younger after your facelift.

Facelifts are highly effective at correcting the following issues:

  • Jowls
  • Sagging areas of fat
  • Loose skin and fat under the chin and jaw
  • Sagging neck skin

It is important to understand that your facelift will not correct wrinkles and other signs of aging in the forehead, eyelids, or nose. If you wish to rejuvenate these regions of your face, Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata may recommend a

  • Brow lift
  • Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)
  • Rhinoplasty (nose job)

If you would like to replace lost volume in your cheeks, Dr. Fata may recommend a mid-facelift or fat injections. At your initial consultation, Dr. Fata will review these options with you in great detail to ensure you make an informed decision about your desired facelift procedure.

What is the Best Age for Breast Augmentation?

December 23rd, 2011

The decision regarding when to get breast augmentation is highly personal. There is no ideal age to undergo the procedure. Instead, you must evaluate a variety of personal factors when determining if this is the right time to move forward with your procedure. These factors include your:

  • Lifestyle
  • Health
  • Financial situation
  • Future life plans

The FDA has placed certain minimum age requirements on your ability to undergo breast augmentation. Saline breast implants are approved for women ages 18 and older, while silicone breast implants are approved for women ages 22 and older. Dr. Joseph Fata recommends that you wait until you have completed your breast development, which is complete for most women by their late teens. He also recommends that you wait until you are old enough to fully understand the risks, as well as the benefits, of breast augmentation.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the vast majority of women choose to undergo breast augmentation in their 20s or 30s. Approximately 65% of all breast augmentation procedures are performed on women falling in this age range. However, it is quite common for women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s to undergo breast augmentation as well.

You should always evaluate your life goals when determining if this is the right time for breast augmentation. If you are planning on having children down the road, you should be aware that pregnancy and breastfeeding may change the size and shape of your breasts, and an additional procedure may be necessary to maintain your result. Also, it is important to look at your financial situation. It makes sense to wait until you can afford the procedure to avoid an additional financial stress. If cost is an issue for you, talk to Dr. Fata about the financing options offered at Renaissance Plastic Surgery.

It is also important to remember that your breast implants will not last forever. However, there is no set schedule for replacement of implants. As long as you are happy with your appearance and have not had either a leak or tightening of the scar tissue capsule, you can keep them indefinitely.

It is always a good idea to consider the potential for revision procedures down the road when deciding if you are ready to undergo breast augmentation.

Dr. Fata will discuss all of these considerations with you in great detail at your initial consultation to ensure that you make a fully informed decision about the ideal time for you to get breast augmentation.

Causes of Breast Asymmetry

December 15th, 2011

Some degree of Breast asymmetry affects the vast majority of women. No two breasts are exactly the same, so having some degree of breast asymmetry should be expected. For most women, the amount of asymmetry is relatively minor and does not significantly impact their appearance. However, in certain cases breast asymmetry can be more pronounced, causing self-consciousness or embarrassment.

Breast asymmetry can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Developmental changes during puberty
  • Changes to your breasts during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Fluctuations in weight which cause breast fat to be deposited unevenly
  • Disease
  • Trauma
  • Mastectomy after breast cancer

Several conditions may also result in breast asymmetry. One of these is Poland’s Syndrome, a condition which occurs when one breast is severely underdeveloped, resulting in a small nipple and the absence of the chest wall muscle which typically lies underneath the breast. Tuberous breasts may also result in breast asymmetry. In this condition, the base of the breast is overly narrow, giving the breast a cylindrical or tubular shape.

Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata can perform a variety of breast enhancement procedures to correct your breast asymmetry. In some cases, breast augmentation using different sizes of silicone or saline breast implants may be sufficient to correct your condition. In others, a breast lift may need to be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation to deliver the results you desire.

At your initial consultation, Dr. Fata will discuss your options with you in detail and recommend the ideal treatment course to address your unique aesthetic goals.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

November 22nd, 2011

In the past, breast augmentation recovery would take one to two weeks, requiring patients to rest at home and refrain from engaging in normal daily activities. This downtime was difficult for many women who regularly juggle the responsibilities of a full-time job and raising a family.

In order to help reduce the recovery time after breast augmentation, Indiana board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata began using the Breast Augmentation 24-Hour Recovery Program 5 years ago for all of his patients. This program effectively reduces your downtime after surgery so that you can more quickly resume your regular routine.

The primary reason traditional breast augmentation had a long recovery was because the swelling and spasm of the chest muscles caused considerable pain around the breast implant. In order to address this pain, you would typically need to take narcotic pain medications which can be associated with side effects such as drowsiness, fatigue, and nausea, all of which slowed down the recovery process.

Dr. Fata’s Breast Augmentation 24-Hour Recovery Program reduces the pain you experience from muscle swelling and spasm by replacing these restrictive bandages with a more comfortable supportive bra. Muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications are also prescribed during and after your breast augmentation procedure to reduce spasms. Dr. Fata will have you start engaging in range of motion exercises that will stretch and soften the muscles in your breast region while you are still at our surgery center.

These alterations to your aftercare regimen will eliminate the need for narcotic pain medication. Instead, the more minimal levels of pain you experience can generally be controlled by non-narcotic pain medications, enabling you to resume normal daily activities the day after your breast augmentation procedure.

It is important to understand that you will still need to avoid heavy lifting and other strenuous activity for about two weeks. Other than that, you are free to do anything you feel comfortable doing right away.

What to Expect after a Tummy Tuck

November 15th, 2011

Despite being an elective procedure, a tummy tuck is major surgery. It is important to have realistic expectations about what will happen during the recovery period, which can take several weeks before you are completely healed.

Following your tummy tuck, you will need to carefully adhere to Dr. Fata’s aftercare instructions to ensure that your recovery goes as smoothly as possible. Your incision will be covered with protective tape to assist healing, and you will have a drain for up to a week.

Dr. Fata will provide you with a compression garment, which must be worn for several weeks to provide you with support while you heal and reduce swelling. Some residual swelling may last up to a few months. You may also experience some pain or discomfort. However, this can be easily managed with pain medication.

It is important to take one week off work following your tummy tuck, since you will not be able to resume regular activities right away. Dr. Fata will give you detailed instructions regarding when you can resume light activities, a normal daily routine, and more strenuous exercise. Generally, it is best to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about six weeks after your procedure.

As you heal, you will see continued improvement. However, it may take as long as six months before your final tummy tuck results are apparent.

Understanding the Value of Breast Enhancement

October 31st, 2011

In today’s tough economic times, many people are weighing large financial expenditures more carefully than ever before to make sure they are getting good value for their hard-earned money. As a result, it is only natural that many women have begun wondering if breast enhancement is worth the cost.

Obviously, that is a deeply personal question that only you can answer for yourself. For some women, the answer is a resounding yes. For others, it is an emphatic no. And there are also many women who have to carefully evaluate the pros and cons before arriving at their decision.

There is no doubt that breast enhancement can be a life-changing experience, boosting your self-confidence and helping you look and feel like the best version of yourself. If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or overall appearance of your breasts, then breast enhancement is most likely worth the expenditure. When performed by a highly skilled and experienced board certified plastic surgeon, your new breast implants should look and feel very natural, providing you with results that will enhance your appearance for years to come.

Most plastic surgeons offer a variety of financing options, enabling you to fit your breast enhancement into the tightest of budgets.

It is important to understand that not all plastic surgeons deliver the same results. In order to ensure that you get the maximum value for your money, you should always work with a board certified plastic surgeon. This guarantees that your surgeon has completed the highest levels of training and passed rigorous examinations demonstrating excellence in the field.

Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata has been delivering exceptional plastic surgery results to patients throughout Indiana for almost 20 years. During that time, he has developed a reputation as one of the top surgeons in the Indianapolis area, and he has been featured as one of “Indianapolis’ Top Docs” in the Indianapolis Monthly magazine for the past four years.

ASPS and FDA Create Breast Implant Registry

October 28th, 2011

Earlier this year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) teamed up with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create a breast implant registry. This registry was established after the FDA received several reports of women developing Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL), a rare form of lymphoma, after undergoing breast augmentation.

Both the ASPS and the FDA have determined that ALCL is not breast cancer, and it has only affected a small number of women with breast implants. Since 1989, there have only been 34 reports of ALCL among nearly 10 million women with breast implants and there is nothing at this time to suggest a cause and effect relationship.

ALCL can develop in the capsule surrounding the breast implants. Both the FDA and ASPS maintain that breast implants are safe. The ASPS recommends that all women diligently maintain all routine medical examinations, especially self-examinations of breasts and mammographies.  If you notice any pain or swelling in your breasts, contact your plastic surgeon immediately.

Indianapolis plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Fata has more than 20 years of experience performing breast augmentation procedures. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board certification is only bestowed on plastic surgeons who undergo extensive ongoing education and pass a series of rigorous examinations. Breast augmentation is a primary focus of Dr. Fata’s practice, and you can be confident that your procedure will be performed according to the highest safety standards established by the medical profession.
